Simultaneous left jab counter (while parrying)
FlowParry and Left jab at the same time
Simultaneous left jab counter (while parrying) means parrying the opponent's left jab with your right hand and driving in your own left jab on the same beat. Unlike "Parry, then left jab," where you parry first and then fire back, the defense and the punch happen at the same time. The moment the opponent punches becomes your time to counter. Because you get your hand out first against their left jab, it's easier to take control of the exchange.

Simultaneous left jab counter (while parrying): step by step
- Stay in your guard and watch for the start of the opponent's left jab.
- As their jab extends, lightly send it off line with your right palm.
- On the same beat as the parry with your right hand, drive your own left jab into their face.
- Bring both hands back in front of your chin and return to your guard.
Simultaneous left jab counter (while parrying): key points
- Defend and punch at the same time. Don't parry and then punch. Layer your right hand touching their jab with your left jab going out.
- The moment the opponent punches is also the moment their face is open. Punching at the same time lets you land before they pull the hand back.
Simultaneous left jab counter (while parrying): common mistakes
- Slipping into the order of parry, then punch. It's no longer a simultaneous counter, and the opponent has time to bring the left hand back.
- Focusing so much on punching that your right hand's parry is late. You take their jab on the face, and your own left jab comes out of a broken stance.
- Swatting their jab with a big motion. Your right hand leaves your face and you're more open to the right cross that follows.
Simultaneous left jab counter (while parrying): how to practice
- In shadowboxing, practice starting the parry with your right hand and the left jab at the same time. Go slowly at first and use a mirror to check that both hands move on the same beat.
- On the heavy bag, land a left jab at the same time as you make a small parrying motion with your right hand in front of your face. Check that your right hand is still beside your chin after punching.
