Right cross into right uppercut

FlowRight cross → Right uppercut

The right cross into right uppercut is a combination where you follow the right cross with an uppercut from the same right hand. When the opponent locks up their guard against the right cross, you drive the right up from below. Because you throw the same hand twice, you can surprise an opponent who is waiting for the other hand. Link the two without folding your elbow back in, and the second punch comes out fast.

Right cross into right uppercut: step by step

  1. Drive the right cross through to the opponent's head.
  2. Don't fold the elbow of your extended right arm. Go straight into the next movement.
  3. In that same flow, thrust the right uppercut to the opponent's chin on a straight path.
  4. After punching, bring your right hand back in front of your chin and return to your guard.

Right cross into right uppercut: key points

  • If you fold your elbow back in after the right cross before punching, a gap opens between the two. Don't fold it. Move straight from the cross coming back into the uppercut.
  • Don't let the uppercut arc. Drive it up in a straight line.
  • While you're throwing rights back to back, keep your left hand in front of your face.

Right cross into right uppercut: common mistakes

  • Folding your elbow all the way back to your side after the right cross. That creates a wind-up, and the opponent reads the uppercut.
  • Swinging the uppercut up big from below. The path bulges out, and the guard on the right side of your face opens.

Right cross into right uppercut: how to practice

  • In shadowboxing, from the position where the right cross finished, slowly repeat moving into the uppercut without folding your elbow. Check that there's no stop between the two punches.
  • On the heavy bag, throw the right cross at head height and drive the right uppercut straight up to chin height. Also check that your left hand doesn't leave the front of your face.
