FlowLeft jab → Right cross → Left body hook → Right uppercut

The jab, cross, left body hook, right uppercut is a four-punch combination: after two shots to the head with the one-two, you hit low with a left body hook and go back to the head with a right uppercut. The height changes high, high, low, high, so you can move the opponent's guard up and down. It's an advanced form to take on once you can throw the one-two and the diagonal from the right into the left body hook without breaking down.

Jab, cross, left body hook, right uppercut: step by step

  1. Throw the left jab to the opponent's head.
  2. Drive the right cross through to the head and draw the opponent's guard up.
  3. As you pull the right back, bend your knees, lower your left shoulder, turn your hips the other way and throw the left body hook into the opponent's side.
  4. From that lowered position, drive the right uppercut up to the head.
  5. When you finish, bring both hands back in front of your chin and return to your guard.

Jab, cross, left body hook, right uppercut: key points

  • The order of heights is high, high, low, high. Teach your body the flow of hitting high again right after the opponent guards low.
  • This is an advanced form you put together once the basics are in. Practice it when you can throw the one-two and the diagonal from the right into the left body hook without breaking down.
  • Use the low position you sank to for the left body hook as your base for the right uppercut. Don't stand up before punching. Drive up from the low position.

Jab, cross, left body hook, right uppercut: common mistakes

  • Throwing all four punches at full power. You lose your balance partway through, and the last two punches are slow.
  • Dropping your right fist low before the right uppercut. The opponent reads it and brings their guard back.

Jab, cross, left body hook, right uppercut: how to practice

  • In shadowboxing, start slowly, checking only the heights: high, high, low, high. Speed up once the height changes are smooth.
  • On the heavy bag, throw the four punches in one flow, switching between head height and body height. Check all the way through to both hands being back in front of your face when you finish.
