A personal site documenting how Dragon Ball Z: Gekitou Tenkaichi Budoukai (Datach Joint ROM System, 1992) turns a barcode into a character with stats. It is not a strategy guide. The subject is the generation rules themselves.
The core of it is the retail JAN/EAN algorithm, but the Datach also reads a Bandai-proprietary card format, which works by different rules and is covered separately on 4. Bandai's barcode.
hitoyoyo. I had a Datach as a kid, and what stuck with me was that no matter what I scanned, I got weak characters. Frieza and Cell never turned up once. That irritation is what this whole thing grew out of, thirty years later. It turns out the transformed forms land at roughly one in eight thousand, so it was not bad luck.
The work went in two stages: inferring the structure from the scan data earlier researchers had collected, then examining how the game itself computes the result, on my own copy, and matching the real tables and logic against that inference. It would have been beyond me at the time. What changed is that the bulk cross-checking and the code reading can now be handed to an AI, which is what let one person finish it. Where the data came from is set out under sources and credits.

Reports of hardware disagreeing with the tool are the most useful thing you can send. When you do, please include the barcode digits and the character, HP, BP, DP and special move level that appeared on the hardware, so the case can be reproduced here.
