Left uppercut and left hook from the same start

FlowLeft uppercut → Left hook

Left uppercut and left hook from the same start is a technique for throwing either the left uppercut or the left hook from the same elbow movement. If the start is the same, the opponent can't tell which one is coming until just before the fist lands. Follow the left uppercut with a left hook, and you can hit the side of the face of an opponent braced for an attack from below. It gives your left hand more options at close range.

Left uppercut and left hook from the same start: step by step

  1. From your guard, start moving your left elbow in a set way. Don't change this first movement between the uppercut and the hook.
  2. From that start, drive the left uppercut up from below to the chin.
  3. Partway through bringing your left hand back, start again with the same elbow movement.
  4. Just before impact, switch your fist onto a sideways path and hit the side of the face with the left hook.
  5. After punching, bring your left hand back in front of your face.

Left uppercut and left hook from the same start: key points

  • Keep the start of the elbow movement the same. If differences show, like dropping the elbow only for the uppercut or flaring it only for the hook, the opponent reads it.
  • The paths split just before impact. Until then, carry your fist in the same shape.
  • Don't just throw the two back to back. Be able to pick either one and throw it from the same start.

Left uppercut and left hook from the same start: common mistakes

  • Flaring your elbow wide to the side only when you throw the hook. The starting shape tells them it's a hook, and they adjust their guard to it.
  • Dropping your fist before the uppercut. The shape of your start changes, and there's no point in mixing them anymore.

Left uppercut and left hook from the same start: how to practice

  • In shadowboxing, alternate the left uppercut and left hook from the same start. In front of a mirror, check that the first elbow movement looks the same for both.
  • On the heavy bag, throw the left uppercut into the left hook back to back, then keep only the start the same and throw one or the other. Check that the way your body moves in doesn't change when you switch.
