Left uppercut, recenter, right cross
FlowLeft uppercut → Recenter → Right cross
The left uppercut, recenter, right cross is a combination where, after throwing the left uppercut, you return your weight to the middle between your front and back feet and then throw the right cross as the power punch. The left uppercut breaks the guard from below, and you send the right cross through the opening in front. Putting the recentering motion in between lets you get your weight behind the right. The more you tend to lunge forward on uppercuts, the more carefully you should practice this recentering.

Left uppercut, recenter, right cross: step by step
- Drive the left uppercut up from below to the opponent's chin.
- Right after punching, return your weight, which has shifted onto your front foot, to the middle between your front and back feet.
- Once your weight is back in the middle, push the floor with your right foot and throw the right cross, the power punch.
- After punching, bring your right hand back beside your chin and settle your guard.
Left uppercut, recenter, right cross: key points
- If you put too much weight on your front foot with the left uppercut, there's no drive left in your legs for the right cross.
- Recenter right after throwing the left uppercut. Because you recenter before throwing the right, your weight goes into the right cross.
- The power punch is the right cross. Throw the left uppercut as preparation to get the right through.
Left uppercut, recenter, right cross: common mistakes
- Lunging forward on the left uppercut and throwing the right with your weight still on your front foot. The right cross becomes arm-only, and your reach gets shorter too.
- Making the recentering motion too big. A gap opens before the right comes out, and the opponent brings their guard back.
Left uppercut, recenter, right cross: how to practice
- In shadowboxing, after the left uppercut, stop once to check that your weight is in the middle, then throw the right cross. Once you're used to it, remove the stop and overlap the recentering with the start of the right.
- On the heavy bag, after the left uppercut, return to a guard with your weight evenly on both feet, then drive in the right cross.
