Pushing jab into the cross

1Left jabLoad2Right cross

Flow(light) Left jab → Load → Right cross

The pushing jab into the cross doesn't stop at landing the left jab. You put your weight into the opponent's guard or shoulder and push them lightly. Pushed, their guard splits, their balance breaks, and they try to get back into position. Right at that moment, you load your weight onto your back foot and drive the right cross through with your whole body working together.

Pushing jab into the cross: step by step

  1. Land the left jab on the opponent's guard or shoulder and push lightly, with your arm and core working together.
  2. Watch the opponent's balance break from the push.
  3. The moment they try to recover, load your weight on your back foot and brace your core, then drive the right cross through by combining the push off your back foot, the turn of your hips and pulling back your left hand.
  4. Bring both hands back in front of your chin and reset your guard.

Pushing jab into the cross: key points

  • Don't land the left jab with just your arm. Push lightly with your core behind it. The opponent's guard splits, and their attention and balance shift forward.
  • Your timing is the moment the opponent tries to recover from the broken position.
  • Drive the right cross through by combining the push off your back foot, the turn of your hips and the pull of your left hand, all at once.
  • You can finish with either the right cross or a hook. From the same load, you can go into either one.

Pushing jab into the cross: common mistakes

  • Lunging in with your whole body as you push. Your own balance breaks, and you can't load for the right cross.
  • Not loading after the push and throwing the right with your arm only. There's no power to drive through, and you're too late to hit the opponent before they recover.

Pushing jab into the cross: how to practice

  • In shadowboxing, after the pushing left jab, feel your weight settle on your back foot, then throw the right cross.
  • On the heavy bag, push the bag lightly with the left jab so it swings, and drive the right cross through as it comes back.
