Right body uppercut, then left hook

FlowRight body uppercut → Left hook

Right body uppercut, then left hook is a close-range combination where you drive a right uppercut up into the opponent's stomach, then go for the head from the side with a left hook. Because you attack on the diagonal, from low on the right to high on the left, it's easier to get over the guard of an opponent whose attention has gone to their stomach. Use it at very close range, when you want to break down an opponent who is only guarding high.

Right body uppercut, then left hook: step by step

  1. At close range, bend your knees slightly and lower your body a little.
  2. Throw the right body uppercut. Keep your right elbow bent, push off the floor with your back foot, and drive your fist up into the opponent's stomach.
  3. As you bring your right fist back beside your chin, turn your body back so it's set to rotate into the left hook.
  4. Throw the left hook from the side to the opponent's head, then bring both hands back to your guard.

Right body uppercut, then left hook: key points

  • Attack the opponent's body on the diagonal, from low on the right to high on the left. Stomach and head, right and left all switch, so they can't cover both with one guard.
  • From the moment you throw the right body uppercut, be set up to go straight into the left hook. Don't stand up tall on the uppercut. Keep some bend in your knees so you can rotate into the left hook.
  • Use your hips turning back from the right body uppercut as the rotation of the left hook.

Right body uppercut, then left hook: common mistakes

  • Standing up tall on the right body uppercut. Your weight lifts and you have nothing left to brace for the left hook.
  • Dropping your left hand as you throw the right body uppercut. The left side of your face opens and you take the opponent's right hook.
  • Pulling your right fist way back before the right body uppercut. The wind-up shows and the opponent stops it with their elbow.

Right body uppercut, then left hook: how to practice

  • In shadowboxing, stop at the end of the right body uppercut and check that you're set to throw the left hook right away. Once that checks out, run it through without stopping.
  • On the heavy bag, stand close and land the right body uppercut low on the bag and the left hook at head height. Also check that both hands come back to your chin at the end.
