Can you visit Buena Vista?

A year-round tourist farm; admission is ¥1,200 for junior-high-school age and above and ¥600 for primary-school children (¥700 and ¥300 in winter, free below school age). The park opens 09:00–17:00 from 15 April to 5 November and 10:00–16:00 from 6 November to 9 April, and is closed from 10 to 14 April. It also closes on sale days and for the marathon event, so it is worth phoning (0144-58-2812) just before you set out. You can meet the horses at the veterans' barn without booking. Do not feed anything other than the feed sold on site, keep away from behind the horses, selfie sticks are not allowed, and please refrain from leaving offerings at the memorial stones. A free shuttle bus runs from New Chitose Airport.

Buena Vista's racing career

21 starts, 9 wins in the JRA plus 2 starts without a win overseas (UAE); JRA earnings ¥1,386,433,000. Six G1-level wins: the 2008 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies (Jpn1), the 2009 Oka Sho and Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) (Jpn1), the 2010 Victoria Mile and Tenno Sho (Autumn) (G1), and the 2011 Japan Cup (G1). She also won the 2009 Tulip Sho (Jpn3) and the 2010 Kyoto Kinen (G2). Seven 2nd places in the JRA, including the 2009 and 2010 Arima Kinen, the 2010 and 2011 Takarazuka Kinen and the 2011 Victoria Mile (in the 2010 Japan Cup she crossed the line first but was demoted to 2nd). Overseas she was 2nd in the 2010 Dubai Sheema Classic (G1) and 8th in the 2011 Dubai World Cup (G1). She received JRA Awards four years running from 2008 to 2011 and was Horse of the Year for 2010. Her final race was the Arima Kinen on 25 December 2011 (7th).

Buena Vista after racing

A dark bay by Special Week out of Biwa Heidi, bred at Northern Farm in Hayakita (now Abira). From two to five she stayed in the top flight even against males, and piled up second places in the G1 races she did not win. After retiring she became a broodmare at Northern Farm and produced 11 foals between 2014 and 2026; then, aged 20, she moved to Northern Horse Park in Tomakomai on 6 November 2026 and has been greeting visitors in Stable 3 since that day. Jaguar Mail, whom she beat into 2nd in the 2010 Kyoto Kinen, and Rose Kingdom, who was awarded that year's Japan Cup when she was demoted, now also live out their retirement at other farms.
