Spell Marron's racing career
27 starts and 3 wins with the JRA before a move to Kochi in the autumn of 2019, where he ran 75 times for 24 wins. His career figures are 102 starts, 27 wins and 190,493,000 yen in earnings, making him the first horse based at Kochi to pass 100 million yen. He won twelve local graded races: the Kochi Prefectural Governor's Prize (2019 and 2020), the Kuroshio Mile Championship (2020 and 2021), the Sangokan Sho (2020 and 2021), the Kuroshio Sprinters Cup, the Daruma Yuhi Sho, the Nijuyonmangoku Sho, the Fukunaga Yoichi Kinen, the Treno Sho and the Takeyoriwake Sho, completing a clean sweep of every distance among the track's graded events. His last start was at Kochi on 12 January 2025.
Spell Marron after racing
A famously fiery horse nicknamed the “fighting general”, he spent more than five years in Kochi's top class after moving there and won every graded race on the circuit from 1,300 to 2,400 metres. He was given a retirement ceremony in the Kochi paddock in January 2025 and moved to the Kannonji Riding Club in Kagawa, where he is said to have settled enough to let people stroke his face. Even so, when his old stable visited in August 2026 he made as if to bite, so a little of that old temper is clearly still there.
