FlowRight hook → Left body uppercut

Right hook, left body uppercut is a diagonal combination where you hit the side of the head with a right hook to make the opponent raise their guard, then drive a left uppercut into the open stomach. You split high and low along your body's diagonal: right up top, left down low. Use it at close range. Going to the body also sets up your next shot upstairs.

Right hook into left body uppercut: step by step

  1. Throw a right hook to the side of the opponent's face.
  2. As you bring your right fist back, get ready to shift your weight to your left foot.
  3. Bend your knees slightly to lower your stance, and drive the left uppercut up from below into the area from the solar plexus to the liver.
  4. Bring your left fist back and return to your guard.

Right hook into left body uppercut: key points

  • Use the right hook as a shot to make the opponent raise their guard. Making them protect up top opens the stomach.
  • If you shift your weight to your left foot as the right hook comes back, you can drive the left uppercut up with your body's rotation.
  • Keep the left uppercut short at close range. Keep your elbow close to your body and send it straight up from below.
  • After you hit the body, the opponent's attention goes down. Think of it as setting up your next shot upstairs.

Right hook into left body uppercut: common mistakes

  • Swinging the right hook wide. It's slow to come back, and the opponent resets before you throw the left uppercut.
  • Lunging forward with just your upper body on the left uppercut. Your head ends up in front of the opponent and you're more likely to get hit back.
  • Not bringing your right hand back after the right hook. The right side of your face stays open.

Right hook into left body uppercut: how to practice

  • In shadowboxing, go slowly and check that the right hook coming back, the weight shift to your left foot and the left uppercut driving up are one continuous movement. Repeat.
  • On the heavy bag, throw the right hook at head height and the left uppercut at stomach height. Check that you hit the same heights every time.
