Kyoei Ashura after racing
After winning his first two starts he went four years and five months without another victory, and only came into his own when he was switched to dirt at seven. He took the Tele Saitama Hai Oval Sprint at the 43rd attempt, giving his trainer a first graded win too. He raced 80 times, carrying on until he was eleven, and retired at the end of 2018; after a spell at a training yard in Okayama he has lived since July 2019 at a riding centre in Azumino beneath the Northern Alps, and at 19 — he turned 19 on 24 January 2026 — he still carries riders in lessons.
