Gustave Cry's racing career
19 starts and 5 wins in JRA racing, with career earnings of 175.27 million yen. In March 2012 he took the Hanshin Daishoten (GII) by half a length from the Triple Crown winner Orfevre for his first graded victory. That same year he was second in the Diamond Stakes (GIII), third in the Kyoto Daishoten (GII), fifth in the Tenno Sho (Spring) (GI) and first in the Soshun Stakes (16-million-yen class). In November 2012 he ruptured the superficial flexor tendon of his right foreleg in the Argentine Republic Cup, was judged to have lost his racing ability and was retired.
Gustave Cry after racing
His sire is Hearts Cry and his dam is Fabulous La Fouine, winner of the 1996 Shuka Sho. In the 2012 Hanshin Daishoten he saved ground along the inside rail and held off, by half a length, the late charge of Orfevre, who had veered away to the outside. He has lived at the same stable in Higashiomi, Shiga Prefecture ever since he left the track, and the ruptured tendon in his right foreleg took two years to heal. He once appeared at riding competitions and worked as a training companion for horses in livery; now, to spare that leg, he carries nobody and spends his eighteenth year on led exercise and sunbathing in the paddock.
