Can you visit Grand Silk?

Contact the farm to book at least two days before the day you wish to visit (the same applies to groups). Viewing hours are 8:00 to 10:00, and the farm is closed every Tuesday. A member of staff accompanies visitors, and access inside the stable block is restricted. Many racehorses are boarded here, so do not approach any stall other than the one you are shown; call ahead if you want to bring carrots, and a mask is requested. Check with the farm before using a selfie stick, and permission must be obtained on the spot on the day to post photographs or video on social media. A visit can be called off at short notice depending on the weather or the horse's condition.

Grand Silk's racing career

Five wins from 24 starts with the JRA and earnings of 204,378,000 yen. On 10 September 2017, at his tenth attempt in a graded race, he won the Keisei Hai Autumn Handicap (GIII). He was second in the 2015 New Zealand Trophy (GII), second in the 2017 Chukyo Kinen (GIII), third in the Keio Hai Spring Cup (GII) and third in the Lord Derby Challenge Trophy (GIII) that same year, and fifth in the 2015 NHK Mile Cup (GI). In February 2018 he fractured the first phalanx of his left foreleg, was judged to have lost his racing ability, and his registration was cancelled on 28 April that year.

He was sent off favourite from his debut as a two-year-old, yet race after race he failed to get there; only in the autumn of his five-year-old season, at his tenth attempt in a graded race, did he finally take the Keisei Hai Autumn Handicap. A fracture of the first phalanx of his left foreleg ended his career in the spring of his six-year-old year. He was announced as heading for life as a riding horse, but instead went to stud, serving a handful of mares a year as a private sire at Hokuso Farm in Katori, Chiba, from 2019. His registered use was changed on 10 March 2026, and he now lives as a pensioned hero at the Hokuso Riding Club on the same grounds. His owner reports that he is in perfect health, but asks visitors to take care because he may nip. The club is also where Oju Chosan, the jumping champion and another son of Stay Gold, did his conditioning work.
