Merci Monsan's racing career
25 starts and 2 wins with the JRA. He debuted at Hanshin in December 2007 but never won on the flat; switched to jumps, he took his first victory in a maiden hurdle at Kokura in August 2009. The following spring he won the Nakayama Grand Jump (J-GI) to reach the summit of Japanese jump racing. He earned 98,111,000 yen and his racing registration was cancelled in April 2013.
Merci Monsan after racing
A horse with a remarkably lopsided record: nearly two years without a win on the flat, then just two victories over jumps — one of which was the Nakayama Grand Jump. After retiring he passed through a riding club in Higashiomi, Shiga, before moving to Horse Trust at the foot of the Kirishima mountains in Kagoshima, where he lives as one of a herd turned out day and night somewhere among the eleven paddocks spread over roughly 100 hectares of highland. His keepers describe him as a horse with a sweet face but a very strong will, whose coarse, bristling mane is his charm point.
