Can you visit Muho Matsugoro?

He can be seen at the horse petting barn on the zoo’s open days. The summer season runs 29 April to 30 September 2026, 9:00–16:30, then 1 October to 3 November, 9:30–16:00, after which the zoo switches to its winter season. A “draft horse petting” session (11:30–11:40, at the petting barn) is scheduled on some days, mainly weekends and public holidays; the dates are listed in the spot-guide announcements on the zoo’s official blog.

A draft horse of nearly one tonne who spent his career hauling heavy sleds, he moved to Obihiro Zoo in November 2023 together with his companion Torashige, and the pair became known as “Tora and Matsu” at the newly built horse petting barn. After Torashige died of illness in April 2025 he was left on his own, but that November the Hokkaido ponies Tama and Yoshi joined him, followed in December by the draft horse Yukihime, and he now lives quietly in a herd of four. On the zoo’s open days he can be seen up close at the petting barn, and on some days a scheduled draft-horse petting session is held.
